Hollyburn, round two

Over a year and a half ago I sewed the Sewaholic Hollyburn skirt and didn't care for it. Don't get me wrong, the pattern was great, I just wasn't into the long and high waisted skirt look on me. Fast forward to June 11, 2014 when Caroline posted her version of Hollyburn. I loved her fabric choice and the shorter version (View C) had a different feel to it than the long version I originally made (View A). Her post was perfect timing because I was headed down south for the Los Angeles Sewist Meetup a few days later.

The fabric for the skirt was purchased during the meetup at The Fabric Store in Los Angeles. The right side feels almost like a flannel, but the wrong side doesn't have the same texture. Rochelle inspected it and said that it seems like a brushed cotton twill. Whatever it is, it was really nice to sew :)

There were no modifications or variations from the original pattern other than finishing the hem with bias tape. Don't laugh, but it was a first for me and now I am a convert. How have I went so long without doing this?!? I debated catch stitching the bias tape by hand, but with how busy the print is I figured I could get by without.

The blouse is the Deer and Doe Plantain pattern. I've made and blogged about a couple now, so I don't have anything new to say, sorryyyyyy! The fabric is a black knit from Girl Charlee and I'm bummed to say that I'm not 100% impressed. After prewashing the fabric once (in cold water) the color faded quite a bit. In the photos it's not apparent (or is it? haha), but in person it's noticeable.

My awesome neighbor took these blog photos when she saw me outside messing around with my tripod. She took four total (I took the one of my hem and didn't post the other) which was perfect since I was exhausted after a whirlwind weekend and 8+ hours of travel time. Luke, Frankie (my pup), and I went on a quick trip to Oakland, but you'll hear more about that in my next post ;)

Overall, I'm really happy with my skirt and plan to make another in the future. Isn't it funny how you can dislike a look on yourself one day and months later end up liking it?

  1. I love it! I'm a sucker for a busy print, what can I say? It's so crazy how changing something so simple as length can really change your opinion about a garment.

  2. Thanks, Erika! You're right, length can make such a big difference, but for whatever reason I seem to forget that haha

  4. I love this skirt and fabric. I think I might have to go back to TFS to try to find it! I haven't thought of purchasing this pattern, but seeing it on you and Lauren, I love it! I need more skirts in my life! So awesome that you got to meet up with Rochelle!

I need to try the Deer and Doe Plantain pattern too. I love the shape neckline.

  5. That paisley print is awesome! I have to say, I wasn't so keen on Hollyburn because I thought the length was awkward but you've changed my mind!

  7. Looks great! I love a big paisley like that, and the texture sounds amazing. It's really incredible how fluid our notions of what we like and what we think looks good on us can be...

  8. Oh my gosh, I LOVE this look on you! So glad you are a Hollyburn convert, because you're seriously killing it! Great fabric! And that's such a gorgeous plaintain, too!

  9. I like the shorter version of this skirt as well. Maybe I need to try my hand at the Kelly skirt again. I hate it on myself but love it on everyone else.

  11. It's funny, I think that skirt is so cute, but have been hesitant to make one for myself. Maybe we should both make them?

  12. Thanks, Sallie! P.S. I loved your Zinnia so much and it inspired me to make another version. I'm working on it now :)

  13. Thanks, Kelly! I'm a total paisley fan. My husband and I just got a new bed and bedding and I chose a paisley duvet haha

  14. Thanks, Erin. I was worried it was going to be super short, but it wasn't at all! But that may have had to do with the fact that I used bias tape on the hem.

  15. You should make one, Kathy! I could see you wearing a Plantain Hollyburn outfit for sure!

  16. Isn't Lauren's version so cute?!?! I love her fabric and wish I had some!

I'd love to see your versions!

  17. It's really cute! You can tell a bit that the T-shirt is faded, but not too bad. That sucks though! I've heard from another blogger that Girl Charlee can have some issues with darker knits. Too bad.

  20. I am OBSESSED with hemming with bias tape! It's pretty much the only way I like to do it now. I also use bias tape all the time instead of facings/linings because Texas is HOT. I always hear people saying they hate bias tape and I feel like there's something wrong with me for loving it so much!
