When I was making the
Lady Skater dress I just knew that I needed to take photos on my husband's skateboard. As soon as he saw me on the skateboard he asked if he needed to record me on his iPhone to send in to the TV show Ridiculousness. Basically, he was saying that he thought I was going to fall and eat shit haha. I am very proud to say that I did not come close to falling, thanks!
I first saw this pattern on
Lauren's blog and loved it so much that I had to buy it. I thought it was the perfect knit dress and I needed it in my life. After sewing it up my original thoughts proved to be true, it's pretty awesome! I am going to make a leopard/floral print version and a 3/4 sleeve length LBD.
Because I'd never sewn any of Amanda's patterns before I wanted to make a wearable muslin. This glittery orange and white fabric was on sale at
Mood, so I snapped it up and got to work sewing. The pattern is extremely straightforward and has two sets of instructions. The first set of instructions are illustrated with lots of photos, almost like a sew along inside the pattern! The second set of instructions are for "bad asses"(sounds like something I would say, but those are her words!) and do not use any pictures, just text. Those directions are also really clear and easy to follow. Apparently I am an official "bad ass" because I followed the second instructions :p
The only thing I will change for my next version is the waistline. I'd like it to be a little higher, so I will shorten the pieces by an inch or so.
FYI the pattern is a downloadable pdf and you have to tape all the pieces together. I hateeeeeeeee HATE doing that, but it wasn't so bad! There aren't a ton of pattern pieces and the dress is so cute that I had to make an exception.
See, no falling from me!
Do any of you have plans to make this dress?
I've been getting the itch to try knits with a knit dress and I can't decide between this one and Red Velvet by Cake. Looks lovely though!

ReplyDeleteLove the dress: very summery! I too made a muslin of the lady Skater and i'm trying to figure out if the waist is too low for my body or if it's made that way. Do you think the waist seam should hit at the smallest part of our waist or was it made to be lower? Can't wait to hear your thoughts about this so I can go make another version!

ReplyDeleteI've really been wanting to try out a knit dress that is simple, yet cute. I've seen this one gaining popularity, which makes me lean towards trying it out :) Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis one definitely fits the bill. I've made three versions of it so far and I love them all. I love that I can squeeze it out of two yards of fabric, so it's great when you're low on yardage.
ReplyDeleteBoth are great if you're looking to learn how to sew with knits. This one is a little more on the beginner side than Red Velvet, but the upcoming sewalong Steph has planned for RV would probably be a great time to learn. Her sewalong for her Tiramisu pattern back in January was how I originally learned how to sew with knits. :D

Cute! Love your fabric choice! I just made a lady skater dress and I have fabric lined up for a few more. I also plan to raise the waist up just a bit on my next one. Can't wait to see your others :)

It's supposed to hit at the smallest part of the waist so a lot of people (myself included) have to shorten the bodice to move the waist seam up. ReplyDeleteHow could I mind: hearing this from you is even better! I know my natural high waist was higher up on my long torso than normal, but this confirms it. I think my smaller bust might also be contributing to the longish bodice. I'll carefully hack-off a few inches for my next muslin. Thanks so much for the tip! Can't wait to make another dress!
