My Week with Marilyn

Whenever a movie is made I always read the book first, if there is one. Not too long ago I read My Week with Marilyn. It took me a long time to read because I wasn't into it. Unfortunately, the same went for the movie :( The bright spot was seeing the outfit above. I loved the gingham pants, black shirt, and scarf combination. Then it hit me that I should sew this for That's Sew Cinematic!

I have the Clover pant pattern, but I am hesitant to start sewing. I have never sewn a pair of pants and I am worried that the gingham might be hard to match up (I haven't matched prints yet either). To those of you that have sewn up Clovers, what do you think? Will it be a nightmare to sew with gingham or will it be fine?

  1. I haven't sewn my Clovers yet (but I'm using the pattern as a jumping off point for my own Sew Cinematic project), but I can say that matching gingham on a curve (like on a crotch) can be annoying if you aren't super careful in the cutting and pinning. I think it would be doable though.

  2. I have made 4 pairs of clovers and it's a very easy pattern, but you might have to muslin the hell out of it to get the fit you want. Just buy extra fabric in the gingham and know that it might not all be perfect but only you will ever notice.

  3. Ooh, what an awesome outfit!! You are going to rock that!! Colette Patterns did a Clover sew-along, which was amazing: http://www.coletterie.com/?s=clover+sew+along and they have a great tutorial for matching patterns: http://www.coletterie.com/tutorials-tips-tricks/tutorial-how-to-match-plaids-and-stripes

    You must sew this outfit!

  4. I've made the clover pattern and it is easy. Definitely make a muslin for fit though. As for the matching, I think gingham is one of the easier checks to match. And there are only 2 pieces... the front and the back, and you "cut 2" of each, but cutting them each one at a time helps with the matching.

    1. I will definitely be making a muslin. Or many muslins, not sure yet :)

  5. I haven't sewn the clover but I have faith you can do it. Matching stripes is all about matching them when you cut. Cut one piece and lay it over the other to match the stripes/pattern. Good luck!

  6. The clover is a really nice straightforward pants pattern - and they'd be perfect for this look! I agree with some of the other comments - definitely make a muslin (or two) before you begin to get them to fit how you want.

I think because this pattern has such few pieces you should be able to match the gingham fairly easily.

  7. I agree with Sallie... once you've got the fit down, the pattern is super simple and straightforward, so gingham matching should be okay. Are you looking for a stretch gingham?

  8. The Clovers will be so cute in gingham! I bet the gingham won't be too noticeable if it isn't perfectly matched since it's kind of a busy print. Good luck!!
